Chocolates and flowers are fine -- she might just be glad you remembered -- but they don't say much about you and your personality! Anyway, didn't you give flowers and a card last year? That doesn't show much effort. And, what you give her makes a statement about you too. Why not make her feel really special (and appear rather special yourself) by giving her a special present this birthday?!
Avoiding the chocolates and card birthday present trap means an extra effort It will make her feel extra special and prove you are a well-rounded INDIVIDUAL
OK, we've established it is not flowers and chocolates. Add to that fragrance (if you give that every year), lingerie (if it's basically a present for you -- see our lingerie gift guide) and any clichés you can think of. Don't worry if you just exhausted your sum total of birthday present ideas! We're just clearing your mind, so you can start thinking about HER and this special birthday present. Thinking about her is how you'll solve this problem.
OK, do I have to spell it out? Who is your wife / girlfriend / partner? I didn't mean her name! I meant her interests, ambitions, personality, likes, dislikes, hobbies, friends, passions, work and so on. Make some lists about her. Think about some recent conversations with her. Has she mentioned anything? Have you missed any hints from her? Men: This could get you into serious trouble -- it's one of the Top-ten Present-buying Blunders mentioned in our gift buying mistakes guide.
Start thinking about her (rather than aimlessly browsing) and you'll get present ideas straight away...
Now, let's not get carried away -- you are only choosing a birthday present for her! This theory may sound a bit over-the-top, but in practice it's easy. For example:
Example...
She likes travel (ooh - is that a theme?) When you travel, she is really interested in the art museums. AND, her favourite artist is Dali. You surprise her with a trip to Figueras, Spain complete with tickets to the Dali Musuem and stop-over. Bingo - you've hit the brownie points jackpot!
This should delight a girlfriend or wife. For other relations and friends, you can still use the same process. Of course, you could have just bought her another Dali print or book, or taken her on a minibreak somewhere else, but this present would surely mean so much more.
Is there something that she has always wanted to do...?
