A bottle often has people reaching for the gift bag, but this can be a bit naff. There's not much unwrapping to be done and the bags themselves are hardly the height of sophistication. Resist the temptation of the path well-trodden and try this gift wrapping technique instead. It puts the joy back into unwrapping a good bottle of something!
The easiest way to wrap a bottle is to cheat and either put it in a box or slip it into a gift bag. But, what about when you don't have a box or bag to hand that fit? You can achieve great results wrapping the bottle itself using this technique.
This guide skips over the basic cylinder wrap. If you're unsure about this stage then look at How to Gift Wrap a Cylinder.
1. To measure out the gift wrap, stand the bottle about 1cm in from the end.
2. Now tip the bottle over on to its side from where it was standing.
3. Leaving 10 cm or 4 inches extra, cut the paper across.
4. Make a tube around the bottle. At the bottom end leave just enough wrapping paper to fold over halfway across the bottom of the bottle. More detail about wrapping cylindrical shapes.
5. At the join in the gift wrap, cut down to the bottle inside.
6. Fan fold the bottom. There is more explanation of this process in How to Gift Wrap a Cylinder or Tube
7. Continue folding in the bottom all the way around.
8. Fold the final edge under. Tuck in any excess under the last fold and tape.
9. Flatten excesss wrap at the top, drawing the edges in slightly for a closer fit. Notice that the centre join no longer runs true.
10. Fold in the nearest edge towards the centre and crease gently. The newly created edge should run to the centre line of the bottle.
11. Repeat for other outside edge.
12. Fold in any excess gift wrap so that you finish with a triangular flap.
13. Fold back flap and tape.
14. (Optional) Tie the stem of the bottle with a ribbon bow. You can use this to attach your gift tag.
