They constantly probe for hints and clues about what gifts you might want.

Men: This is pathetic. What does it say about how well you know her? Are you really that disinterested? Think -- it isn't illegal yet!

Then they don’t take the gift hint!

Men: If there is something specific she wants you will get plenty of hints well in advance of the impending birthday or anniversary. Failure to pick-up on any of these will just show what an insensitive b**stard you are. Moreover, if you do get the hint accept it quietly and make a mental note. DO NOT seek to verify it, by asking her if she would like that for Christmas/ your anniversary/ her birthday present. If she wanted to spell it out to you, she wouldn't have used anything as subtle as a hint!

They buy gifts that a woman should only buy for herself

Men: Are you really abreast of the latest fashion trends for women? Have you really come to understand the subtleties of how your partner likes to present herself to the World? Don't you remember the last time you went clothes shopping with her? You thought 99% of what she tried on looked 'fine', but she didn't buy any of it. This episode alone should tell you something: you are not qualified to buy her clothes! So what makes you think you are on her birthday, anniversary or at Christmas?

When she says, "don’t bother" or "oh, just something small" they take it literally!

Men: It would be a schoolboy error to take such remarks at face value. Have you learnt nothing about female psychology? Clearly these protestations are a warning that you should really go to town on your present buying for this birthday! Don't get caught out.

They present the gift badly or don't give graciously

Men: Don't spoil a great present with shoddy wrappings. Use plenty of bows and ribbon and decent Christmas paper. Also, when you give it, don't apologise first. Don't instigate a guilt trip over its cost or boast about it and don't say that the man in the shop thought you would like it! Leave her in no doubt that you chose it and are giving it because you love her.
