Tips when buying diamond jewellery...

They are a girl's best friend and the ultimate jewellery gift. Beware of rings, however, unless you're ready to make that commitment!
A diamond is between 60 to 1700 million years old and was made 150 kilometres underground. It was formed in a pressure cooker of molten magama before erupting to the earth's surface.

Diamonds have been coverted as the ultimate gem stone throughout history. At 99.95% carbon they are the purest substance know to man.
Diamond gift buying tips
  • Like gold, your gift needs to weigh heavily in carats, if it is to impress.

  • Carat denotes the gem's weight, but colour and clarity are equally important to judging gem quality.

  • The nearer a stone is to colourless, the greater its value.

  • All diamonds have some minute impurities; the harder to detect, the better.

  • A professional cut of the diamond adds great value to your gift too.

When buying gold gifts...

It's all about those carats; the higher they are the more special someone is going to feel and the more it's going to hurt your bank balance!
Don't get too obsessed with carats, however, and forget to buy something she would actually want to wear. Style is just as important!

When buying silver gifts...

Silver has become the more popular choice for jewellery among younger women. It is less ostentatious than gold, which is also often seen as an older-person's thing. Plus it is the preferred material of many of the younger boutique jewellers that specialise in more adventurous design.

Sterling Silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% copper) is the standard for jewellery in the UK. Adding copper toughens the silver and makes it feasible to use silver 925 (Sterling Silver) for jewellery.

You can check the quality of your silver jewellery, by looking at the hallmark. The following all denote Sterling Silver:
  • sterling
  • sterling silver
  • stg
  • .925
Not everyone can wear Sterling Silver jewellery !
Some wearers turn it black (acid skin) or have an allergic reaction - especially to earrings. Check your girlfriend/ wife/ partner doesn't suffer from either of these before buying her gift.

Finally, don't spoil your gift

Right, you've got a gift she'll adore in the right size, now don't blow it on the presentation!
  • Make a good job or wrapping your gift. Use plenty of bows and ribbon and decent wrapping paper.
  • Give it properly. Don't apologise first. Don't instigate a guilt trip over its cost or boast about it and don't say that the woman in the shop thought you would like it!
  • Leave her in no doubt that you chose it and are giving it because you love her.
