The Exclusive Jewellery Gift Guide

Choosing a jewellery gift

Jewellery is favourite gift of romantics and traditionally a gift a man gives his partner. It's a very personal gift - which is why it is so often exchanged only in the closest relationships.

By giving jewellery, you are making a statement, but it does not have to be an "exclusive / expensive gift." Focusing on the cost alone is a recipe for disappointment. Once she gets over the fact you spent two months salary on her, she still won't wear it if she doesn't like it!

Things to consider before you choose
  • Has she any allergies - eg to silver earrings?
  • What type of jewellery does she wear - mainly silver / mainly gold?
  • What has she already got - there's only so many pearls a girl needs?
  • What does she covet - diamonds, pearls, gold?
  • Does she really want jewellery - don't buy her pearls if she literally wants you to put a ring on her finger!
  • What can you REALISTICALLY afford? Don't try to be flash if you don't really have the cash!

An exclusive vs. expensive gift

An exclusive gift does not necessarily have to be expensive. An expensive gift is not necessarily exclusive!

Spending lots is the lazy way to impress. Really understanding what she likes and picking something really spot-on is far more time consuming and worth it. There are loads of smaller boutiques and handmade jewellery specialists - many are on the Net - so there's no excuse for not finding something "exclusive". Whatever your budget, you can find something that:
  • She hasn't seen before
  • Her friends have never seen either, but think it looks fantastic
  • Has a great story behind it (handmade in Welsh mining village by nuns, etc)
  • Makes her feel like you've gone to a real effort to select an exclusive gift for her!

When buying pearl gifts...

Pearls are another classic jewellery gift, traditionally considered romantic. Their expense makes them an exclusive gift.
Pearls actually come in different tones - not just white!

You should pick a gift that matches her complexion and hair:
  • Creme rose / pinkish pearls suit pale skin complexions and blonde hair.
  • Off white and creme pearls bring out the best in dark skin and brunette hair.
  • Unflattering overtones of green and brown should be avoided.
  • Black are to die for - literally!
Pearls aren't always round either, but the more spherical the more expensive!

Things you should know when buying pearl gifts:
  • Beware of names like bouton or baroque pearls, this means they have irregular or flat shapes.
  • The best quality pearls are always round!
  • Size matters with pearls. Generally, the larger the size of the pearl, the more expensive your gift gets!
  • "Lustre" means the shine of the pearl's surface. A deep and a shiny lustre denotes a fine quality pearl (and gift!)
  • Very few pearls are blemish free, but severe flaws like cracks, over growths on the skin and deep holes equals low quality. She'll figure that out!
